Isla Mujeres Day 7

May 12th, 2007

After the now customary breakfast and pre-departure rituals, we make another run to get a few more shots at the fish. We’re also looking to finish taping a couple of Spanish Fly shows and there’s a few scenes that Tim and Justin are looking for to get the job done. Today’s the last day and as luck would have it, yep, I start feeling a little unsteady from last night’s robust plate of chicken enchiladas that I had washed down with a few margaritas. “You don’t look your chipper self today” Michael remarked with an obvious snicker. “Yeah, I know wise guy” I mumbled back. I manage and make it through the day intact, but with occasional peer harassment about my constantly changing complexion. Jose jumped again into the water with scuba gear on to get some underwater running shots of the boat trolling the dredges and bait. Cool stuff. We hooked up to two sailfish and a few Dorados that helped clinch the video shots that we were looking for. Back at the dock we summarized our journey from the crossing to the awesome fishing to the days of discovery on the island and making new friends in Mexico. I couldn’t have spent my time with a better group of people. I know one thing, I’ll probably never be as good of an angler as Jose is, but if I every come up with an idea to put a television show together, these are the guys that I want on my team. Eric Castillo, my Sea Vee colleague, is flying over with his friend Mario to get in a few days of fishing and bring the boat back to Miami when weather conditions allow. I’ll jet out in the morning. In the meantime, we’re going to have dinner tonight and visit a few bars to say goodbye and celebrate a great Yucatan experience. This may be tricky business the way I’m feeling but I’m going to give it my best effort. I hope to write again when we venture to our next location with who knows who.

Isla Mujeres Day 7

May 11th, 2007

We regroup in the morning for another day on the water. This time Michael looked a little shaky. He was more quiet than usual and very selective about what to eat at breakfast. “Are you okay sparky?” as I like to call him. “Yeah, but I really let the toilet have it last night” he responded. We encountered the inevitable, our first gastrointestinal dysfunction victim. He’ll be alright.

After loading up the Top Vee we headed to the fishing grounds once again with the chase boat tailing us. We set our gear and soon had a nice Dorado hooked up. This one was earmarked to become Roberto’s dinner. Once I had the fish close to the boat Jose opened the side door and we simply slid the creature onto the deck and into the fish box. No struggle, no mess. It couldn’t have been any easier.

Next came a nice Blackfin Tuna that came on board via the side door. Again, a little tug on the leader and the fish slipped onto the deck. Another twitch on the line and he dropped into the fish box. We’re talking about maximum fishability on this boat! We trolled some more and suddenly we had an angry billfish taking swipes at every bait that we had in the water. It was a White Marlin. Jose teased the fish taking turns free spooling and reeling in the rigged ballyhoo bait. Then an explosion occurred near the surface as the marlin felt the hook and bolted skyward. What a sight. Line screamed off the reel as this fish put his raw power on display. We saw plenty of leaps, jumps and runs from this remarkable fish before briefly bringing him on board for some pictures. Then we gently returned him back to the water to perhaps fight another day.

We continued trolling as we began heading back to Isla when a sailfish tagged us. Roberto brought this one in. Then, no sooner than we redeployed our trolling gear and resumed conversation, we had another bite. Jose took this one on and was one Blue Marlin away from a grand slam. But it was not to be as the sun began to set and we called it a day. It was getting late and those tasty fish tacos back on Isla were waiting for us. We’ll try again tomorrow. Life is good! ###
